The Manhua "Fox Spirit Matchmaker" (狐妖小红娘 Huyao Xiao Hongniang) is a romance comic series written and painted by Tuo Xiaoxin (庹小新) and colored by Pansi Daxian (盘丝大仙), with help from JianmoSL (缄默SL).

As of 2020, there are over 370 Manhua Chapters.

The Manhua is also currently being serialized by Tencent Animations (腾讯动画) to create the Donghua / Anime series of the same name. It started in 2015 May 4 and is ongoing.

Background[]

The story is based in ancient Chinese legends. Tuo Xiaoxin thinks that love is a perennial theme in art. He wanted his characters to find their own reasons for love, while imbuing the comic with its own quirkiness, humor, and sadomasochism (虐恋).

The Manhua also goes by the other name《相思树下》roughly meaning 'Under the Tree of Bitter Love'.

The Manhua is about a world where Humans and Yaoguai live alongside each other and fall in love. However, since humans live shorter lives, lovers make a Heart Oath to extend love beyond the grave. When reincarnated though the human forgets the memories of their past life, so it is up to the Tushan Matchmakers to restore their past love.

Read the Manhua at:

  • QQ (official from Tencent, in Chinese)
  • ohmanhua (Chinese)
  • mangakakalot (English translation)
  • 365manga (English translation)
  • webnovel (English translation, paywall for latest chapters): the site is called 'webnovel', but the content is still the Manhua with English translation

There is no official Chinese web novel. Currently, the only official media are the donghua, manhua, game, and TV show (all sponsored or co-sponsored by Tencent, Bilibili, etc. and based off the material by Tuo Xiaoxin).

For more general info on the Manhua and other media see Baidu.

Translation note[]

Manhua is the pronunciation of the Chinese word 漫画 which means 'comic'. Manga is the Japanese pronunciation of those same hanzi / kanji characters. In English, the word Manhua usually refers to Chinese comics, whereas Manga connotes Japanese comics--though sometimes 'Manhua' and 'Comic' are used as synonyms as they really mean the same thing.

Hu Yao means Fox Spirit. Xiao Hong Niang means Small Red Lady, which refers to Susu. Red refers to Susu's job as matchmaker (红线仙 'Red String Fairy') as in Chinese and Asian cultures, lovers meet if they have a red string connecting them. Red could also refer to other things.
