Honghong uses spirit power.

Honghong uses spirit power.

Spirit power or Yaoli (妖力) measures the amount of power a Yaoguai or Daoist has.

It can be cultivated through meditation, practice and exercise.  It is equivalent to the idea of Qi and the practice of Qigong (气功 or cultivating and controlling Qi).

Humans and Yaoguai[]

Humans have very weak inherent spirit power and to make up for their lack of strength have developed Daoist weapons capable of harming spirits.  A strong spirit power enables one to do mighty superhuman feats and survive otherwise deadly attacks.

SpiritPowerFormula

Formula for determining one's martial strength.

Having mere brute strength though is not enough, one must also master techniques to apply the raw power in an effective manner to attacks or other purposes. There are three "pillars" or principles that determine how strong someone's Spirit Power is. The intensity of the power's flow ("Body"), the patterns of its use ("Art") and the control exercised ("Will").

Cultivating one's Body leads to a greater raw amount of spirit power available, while cultivating one's technique with Art leads to a greater amount of control over a technique, while Will primarily helps one apply and use magical weapons or tools.  Spirits are typically stronger in Body and Art, while Daoist's are typically stronger in Art and Will.  There are many different types of Spirit Arts, but mastering even a single one can take years of effort.

A formula can be used to determine one's overall Spirit Power (also called "Abhijna"  神通, literally "power through god" or godly power) when not considering weapons or tools:

Total Power = (Body x Proficiency of Spirit Power) x Proficiency in Art.
