Yaoguai (妖怪), Youkai, or Spirits are one of the main types of characters in Huyao Xiao Hongniang. The Spirit Realm (妖界 Yaojie) refers to the population of all yaoguai.
As opposed to Humans, they usually appear as animals or part-animal part-human. Yaoguai also possess superhuman magical powers or strength.
They are sometimes simply called Yao (妖).
Humans and Yaoguai[]
There are two primary races in the world: Humans and Spirits.
Spirits are very long lived, living for at least hundreds of years (though possibly thousands), though they are not immortal and can be killed with violence. They grow and mature much more slowly compared to humans. Humans while short lived, gain power and strength quite rapidly.
While Spirits are usually more significantly strong having much more powerful spirit power (which is sometimes also called Qi) and a much longer time to cultivate said spirit power (since they live much longer) than a human would, they are not as clever. Humans strength is said to be in their intelligence and have developed powerful anti-Spirit weapons, making them capable of fighting with Spirits on an equivalent level.
For many centuries Spirits and humans feared and hated each other, frequently enslaving each other and killing one another. Despite the bloody history between the two races, some found love and mutual understanding between each other making Pledges of Love in Tushan to complete their union. During Tushan Honghong's reign of Tushan, humans frequently killed and enslaved Spirits. She dreamed of creating a world where their could be peace between the two and eventually, with Dongfang's effort the two succeeded in forming an alliance.
Yaoguai forms[]
Spirits come in a variety of forms, but are most often based on some sort of animal. The most powerful Spirits have achieved a human-like form, but are still capable of transforming into their animal form (such as what many of the Sand Foxes do frequently). Maintaining a human form requires effort and thus the most powerful Spirits will flaunt their ability to remain in human form as a symbol of power and confidence.
Spirits often do not understand laws or a need for laws, having a simple animal-like understanding of the world. As such, they frequently run into trouble with the law created by the Spirit Union and Yi Qi Dao League Alliance and may need to serve time in prison to atone for their wrongdoing.
